Triple Crown of Surfing

The crowd on Sunset Beach for the Triple Crown

Aloha everyone from Oahu. The triple crown of surfing has been going on and I have been hanging out on the north shore here and there. Monstrous waves have made for some great days, and beautiful weather has made for some amazing sites.

Sunset Beach Triple Crown Surfers Surfing

We spent the Sunday after thanksgiving hanging out at Sunset Beach watching the O’Neill World Cup and catching some sun. Tons of people made the trip up and basically stalled the Kam Highway. We ventured up the east side of the island so pretty much avoided all that crazy traffic.

The waves were a solid 15-20 foot face and pounding. Sunset Beach is an OK place to watch surfing. The break they surf is pretty far offshore and Kim and I forgot out binoc’s so that made for a lot of squinting. It was nice however to watch as the round of 96 was in full force.

We did manage to jump in the water a little bit and play in the shore break. Wouldn’t have ever done that if there weren’t already about 200 people in the water. Tends to get a bit sketchy on the North Shore when there are large sets coming in.

We are getting ready for PipeMaster’s. Pip is by far the best wave to watch a contest at. It breaks no more the 100 yards off shore and is large and in charge. We hope that one of the contest days is on the weekend so we can make it up there. Last year finals was on a Sunday so we hope we have the same luck this year.

‘Til next time, stay warm and get surfin’
