28,048 people entered to run the Honolulu Marathon today. Over 12,000 of those were first time marathoners.
The winners: Jimmy Muindi of Kenya finished the 26.2 miles in 2:12:00 while Olesya Nurgalieva from Russia won the women’s division in 2:30:24. For top ten results visit the Honolulu Marathon Site.
The race began at 5:30 in the morning, (I actually was returning from the bars when I saw people start heading to Ala Moana park for the race.) There was beautiful weather for them today, 80 and sunny with a few clouds hovering in from the mountains. Racers ran through downtown Honolulu and then out towards Hanauma Bay only to finish by returning around diamond head and into Kapiolani Park.
The finishers receive bright orange t-shirts that they all have continued to wear around the island. Droves of orange clad people are walking up and down the streets of Waikiki, in and out of the shops, and resting on the beach. Some of them are limping, some of them waddling, but all of them are gleaming due to their accomplishment.
I want to say congratulations to all those finishers of the marathon.
