Alcohol Allowed at UH Tailgating

Aloha Stadium Honolulu Hawaii Oahu

After six months of talks based on a proposed ban of alcohol at UH football games tailgaters can find relief, or maybe not, that the booze will stay. The Aloha Stadium Authority voted 6-1 against the ban and will allow alcohol to be consumed in the parking lot prior to UH football games.

August 4th, 2005 a proposal was endorsed by Lt Gov. Duke Aiona that would eliminate alcoholic beverage consumption in the parking lot prior to all UH football games as well as inside the stadium during the games. The proposal was then amended by Aloha Stadium to allow drinking of alcohol inside the stadium. A good move considering one of their sponsors. The vote was then delayed for a few months as the sides, 2 people vs a whole stadium, deliberated on allowing alcohol in the parking lot or not. Then on January 26th, 2006 the vote was in. 6-1 in favor of Alcohol in the 8,000 stall parking lot.

The reason for the ban was to eliminate rowdy fans from the game. Stats from Aloha Stadium show that in 2003 there were 39 Alcohol related incidents inside the stadium and 13 in the parking lot, 2004 had 44 and 16 (there was also one more game), while in 2005 there were 33 and 4. These incidents include passing out incidents which in our opinion could have been related to blow-out that might have been occurring on the field.

Either way the booze will stay at the stadium and we for one are glad. We went to Michigan where there was no beer in the stadium at all and find it enjoyable to have a cold one while watching a game under the blazing sun.
