If you are looking for some of the most picturesque golfing on the island of Oahu you won’t be disappointed if you stop by the Luana Hills Golf Course. The course was developed by an investor who had gone bankrupt before finishing it off. It was originally to be country club and the amenities layout suggests it was going to be exclusive. The course was turned over to the county and picked up by developer who finished it off and opened it up to the public.
It is 18 holes of beauty located just over the Pali through the Ko’olau Mountain range from Honolulu. Once you get off the Pali Highway the road winds back and forth back towards the mountains you came from. You reach a guarded gate with, a guard, who asks you politely about your business with the course checking if you have a tee time or if you are a visitor admiring the breathtaking landscape. After you pass through the almost Wizard of Oz like gates you meander along three of the course holes wondering how you are going to contend with that par three on your right and the water which surrounds the green.
After you park a bag attendant will most likely greet you in the parking lot and take your clubs below as you walk to the check in and pro shop to pay for your round. If you arrive early enough (we did not this time around) you will be given free range balls and shown to the driving range. Careful here there is no driver allowed due fact the stray balls have ended up on the 10 green. The course management obviously doesn’t want to ruin the view with a large gaudy net so they opted to control what you use on the range.
Once you warm up is off to the course. Make sure you bring a camera and stop often for pictures. The course offers lots of true Hawaii Kodak moments as the holes are littered with giant palms and a rain forest like atmosphere.
