Dog the Bounty Hunter (Duane Chapman) with wife Beth sat in court last week to fight a bill the would severely limit his bounty hunting activities. He was joined by a slew of people (mostly fans) who lined the back of the court room in support of trying to block the bill. Dog who runs DaKine Bail Bonds has become a national icon for bounty hunters. The show claims more than 6 million views which is the highest of any show on the network A&E. His show and his livelihood would be limited by a bill that wants to tighten the hold on who can and can’t become a bounty hunter.
The bill would basically block criminals from ever being able to break down a door to pursue a criminal, which in a business where criminals are evading the law and usually won’t open the door for a bondsman, that spells trouble. The reason Dog is so worried about the bill is because in 1977, almost 30 years ago, he was convicted of murder. He was released two years later on a clemency pardon and has stayed conviction free for those 30 years.
Dog and wife Beth were seen on the news claiming that the bill was proposed and crafted by other bail bondsman around the state who are losing business due to Dogs popularity from his television show. If Dog is unable to break down doors he won’t be apprehending many people which could spell disaster for not only his job but for his hit show. He agrees that not everyone should be able to become a bounty hunter and that those with criminal pasts need to be fully rehabilitated before pursuing this type of career.
“I believe (after) 10 or 15 years — when you know you’ve not had any trouble, you’ve not had any felonies after that, that you’re kind of either rehabilitated or healed — that you can be a normal person,” said Dog.
The bill would also disallow guns to be carried by bounty hunters, something dog agrees with. He and his partners, like son Leland, carry really strong mace. Anyone that watches the show remembers the episode where the went to the west side of Oahu on the beach and ended up macing a hole inside of a truck. The guy went crazy and came after Dog and Leland with a couple other guys and Dog jumped through the window of their truck being driven by Beth leaving Leland behind to fend for himself. What great television that was
Dog, who runs another bail bonds service in Colorado, helped write the bounty hunter bill there and said he would do the same here in Hawaii. I for one hope that these lawmakers realize that Dog is a good asset to have on their side and will allow him to help them develop a new bill for the business. Keep up the good work Dog and we hope to see you around town.
Aloha

I was not there, unfortunetly, but I did write a couple of letters. This bill is being backed by other BEA’s that are in fact, jealous, and as one Lance Wilkinson puts it, in his own words, OBSESSED, with putting Duane Chapman out of business. I hope that they look at where this proposed legislation is coming from. Dog served his sentence and it should not be held against him for the rest of his life.

The bill is so obviously created out of the pure, sour grapes mentality of a bunch of jealous BEAs. I just don’t understand why the Hawaiin government would even entertain this bill, so clearly just a weapon of hate to be used to destroy Duane Chapman.
Has he not done enough good for the people of Hawaii? When you allow a group of jealous losers to manipulate the government in order to use the laws to go after, and attempt to ruin one man, then I say you make a mockery out of the entire judicial process! I think somebody at a federal level better speak up and denounce this witch hunt for what it is: Goverment sanctioned hate and harassment!!
No matter how many jealous, inadequate little BEA punks try to destroy the Dog, they will never succeed! These sour grapes, envious little losers need to get a life!!

I admit to be confused by the BEA’s hatred of Duane “Dog” Chapman. I imagine some of the hatred stems directly from jealousy; Dog is, afterall making a lot of money in an industry where few do. The thing that remains a mystery to me is why a select few are so bound and determined to destroy his career. There are a great many people in this world that I don’t necessarily care for. None of these people however vex me enough to make a crusade out of ruining their careers. Perhaps if some of these BEA’s spent more time on their own cases and causes and less on Duane Chapman, they would find themselves making more money and enjoying more success.
The few that claim to have ruining Chapman as their obsession really confound me. To my way of thinking, this is not a goal…hurting someone like that. A goal is something you set for yourself in your heart and work towards to better your life and the lives of your loved ones. How would any of these BEA’s lives really be improved by Dog’s ruin? Taking the food out of Dog’s children’s mouths will not subsequently put it upon their own tables. It’s merely an exercise in futility, because realistically, even if they win, they win nothing.
I’m sure, should one of them read this comment, they would say “Yes, I would win satisfaction.” To them, I ask how can a decent man be satisfied by the destruction of another? What satisfaction is there is defaming and destroying a man that is out there talking about love, respect and the law? You may disagree with his method, but is it so hard to fathom that his message is reaching millions that likely could be reached in no other way?
This bill is yet another example of this sad and sorry state of bitter battle between the BEA’s and our Dog. Please, for us, stop this senseless hatred! Many of our children need this man out there, combatting Paris Hilton’s message with God’s love. Is your jealousy so important you are willing to ruin a man that is doing nothing to you? You may disagree with the image he portrays of the bounty hunter, but you are not asked to be him. You are not even asked to like him…you are merely asked to leave him to do what he is called to do. He, after all, allows all of you to do what you feel called to, does he not?
Hate the image if you will, but please, focus your energies on improving yourself, not on destroying others.
Dog is loved by millions…let them have him. God knows, in this sorry world a man and his team bringing hope and peddling love is welcome and much needed. Leave him to be what he is, leave us to love who he is. It sometimes takes an ex-con to catch a con, so why fight him? He does not bounty hunt in your kitchen, why fight to take food out of his?

I know dog and his family have been personaly affected by drugs and crime.I think someone as devoted as dog is ,to solve the problem our governments have obviously let get out of hand, makes me wonder who should be running our justice systems. maby the government is offended by the progress ,wether it be forceful,or as kindly as( criminals )would like him to be.I personaly have a loved one who is batteling a drug addiction ,And i know not eneough is being done by our law enforcements to even put a dent in this problem. And i say if his way is working, the law should appreciate his devotion to help them make that dent.I say dont pass the bill. work together.. thanks sincerely carol landry.
