Queen Mary 2 stops in Honolulu

There aren’t too many docks in the world that can hold such a ship but here in Honolulu Harbor we had a chance to see the largest passenger cruise ship in the world: The Queen Mary 2. Holding some 2600 passengers and over 1200 crew the Queen Mary 2 is over 3 football fields long and has a draft (the part that sticks in the water) of 32 feet. That’s crazy big.

The ship is quite an unbelievable sight to see and I couldn’t imagine staying on it. It has a casino, 9 dining halls, blah blah blah blah huge. I work in a building adjacent to the harbor and Aloha Tower and was able to see the massive ship from about what you would consider eye level with the top deck -and we’re on the 11th floor. In one of the pictures below you can see that the Queen Mary 2 dwarfs the Island Princess (seen in the far back right) which is a regular 12 night traveler of the islands.

Looking up some quick statistics of the Queen Mary 2, this 6 night trip that is stopping in the islands cost between $1,300 and $31,000. Not sure what the $1,300 gets you but sounds like a steal compared to that 31K. If you ever are close to a dock that hold this ship go and see it. It is quite a sight to see.

Here are some pictures of it coming into the dock. The day is quite overcast but just look at how it towers over the other ships and the shipyard. This is the only dock that would hold it and it’s a straight shot from the port. I don’ t think this ship would be doing much turning and I don’t think the harbor would allow it.

Take a look! They are links to full size so feel free to click on the images of Queen Mary 2.
