Kauai Dam Burst

The Ka Loko Reservoir Dam burst yesterday on the North Shore of Kauai taking a possible 7 people and 2 houses out into the ocean. The Honolulu Star Bulletin reported today that at 5:45 am yesterday morning water began to pour past the dam and drain down to the shore devastating all surrounding land with an over abundance of water.

The dam burst caused thousands of residents and visitors to be stranded in and blocked out of the Kilauea area, while the flood waters destroyed about 300 feet of the Highway 56 roadway. The road will need to be replaced once state workers are allowed back into the area.

Reports of the dam giving way reveal that local residents heard what sounded like a “Mack truck coming down the hill,” and others said “it sounded like 10 jet engines coming at them.” Not hard to believe when an estimated 300 million gallons of water come towards you carrying trees, dam, and other debris.

The dam itself was privately owned as are 60 other similar dams within the island of Kauai. State officials were checking into the issue of repairing the dam since it has effected hundreds of land owners in the area. Our thoughts go out to family’s that were affected by the situation and hope there is a speedy and safe solution to the problem.
