It has been reported that the Kuhio Highway in North Kauai will remain a 1 lane highway for the next 2 to 4 months. The already fairly small highway will became even smaller due to the massive amounts of rain that caused reservoirs to overflow and dams to burst this past week. An estimated 300 million gallons of water poured out covering most of the highway followed by even more water over the following and coming days.
The reason for the road closure is due to the slope down one side of the road which is estimated at 30 feet. The department of transportation claims the slope will need to be reinforced to support any erosion that may happen due to future rains on the island.
Rain continues to dump on the North Shore of Kauai as well as the rest of the Hawaiian islands. Kauai already has the rainiest spot in the world at the middle of the island and are living up to it this year.
