Eddie Aikau Never Went

The Quicksilver in memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational never went this year. The holding period for the 2006 Eddie Aikau opened on December 2nd, 2005 and closed February 28th, 2006. The contest is held for only 1 day a year at the famous Waimea Bay if and only if the wave heights reach a traditional 20 feet, that’s almost 40 foot face heights.

Those waves along with 24 invited surfers make for quite a day at the Bay. Last year the wave heights reached go time height in mid December. A beautiful day and perfect conditions allowed youngster Bruce Irons to take home the bacon. Even with the huge waves the North Shore of Oahu has been having this year didn’t quite allow for the right wave conditions.

Looks like it will be another year before we see those amazing big wave surfers take on one of the worlds toughest paddle in waves. Oh yeah, you can’t tow into this one. Only paddle in, 50 foot drops, an amazing thing to watch.
