Travel to Hawaii Cheaply

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Ii just read an article from MSNBC.com about traveling to Hawaii for less and for anyone thinking of traveling out this way I would consider it an interesting read. Not really a must be definitely not a waste of time.

Some of the things I didn’t know living here is that you can get a four-day tourist bus pass for $20 and ride the bus for as long as you’d like in those four days. This can be really helpful for those of you not wanting to rent a car, or not old enough to rent a car. A $40 monthly pass can also be bought if you’re thinking of staying for longer than 4 days requiring a bus ride.

Also mentione, Guided hikes can be fun and since Hawaii has some flash floods and rack falls every now and then these companies will help you avoid potential pit-falls.

The article has lots of things to do in Hawaii on the cheap and can help you deal with the rising cost of traveling to paradise.

Pick yourself up with a Hawaii Treat

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Shave Ice is the best treat you can find on the island. Wherever you go, north, south, west or east side of the island, you’ll find someone, someplace selling shave ice.

All it is is ice with a sugary syrup on top. It’s hard to believe that you could go wrong with that combination. It’s hard to believe that you could screw it up, and chances are you can’t. We haven’t been to every place on the island but we’d imagine that you can’t screw it up. Every place we’ve had it it’s been delicious.

Probably the best shave ice place or most famous shave ice place is Matsumoto’s on the North Shore in Haleiwa. If you’re up there, you’ll notice it by the line that stretches into the parking lot. You’ll wait a good 30 minutes to an hour but it’s well woth the wait.

Wind Power on the Big Island by March

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

More wind power is coming to the Big Island. GE is expected to be able to power 10,000 households with it’s newest wind farm being built in South Point on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Fourteen turbines are being built there and are expected to begin providing power to Island Residents by March of 2007. The wind turbines are 1.5 megawatt turbines built by GE. GE is financing the project and the power will be sold to the Hawaii Electric Ligh Company on the island of Hawaii (aka the Big Island).

There is currently a 9.3 megawatt windfarm on the Big Island which would basically be replaced by this new 21 megawatt windfarm.

The Big Island windfarm will join Maui’s newest wind farm which began operating this summer. That farm produces 30 megawatts of power for the island of Maui.

Live Longer, Live in Hawaii

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

Wanna live longer? Live in Hawaii!

In a report issued by the Harvard School of Public Health if you live in Hawaii you have a chance of living past the age of 80.

Now that isn’t true for all races or income classes but for some there are better chances for you to live longer here in Hawaii, even though this state also has a large obessity problem as well.

Hawaii has long prided itself on living relaxed and living the Aloha spirit. Honking your horn is a no no. Driving long distances is consider a days work (long is 40 miles here), and over working yourself is means for a holiday.

Although income levels are lower than average in the state, those who live in Hawaii still have a good chance of being able to live past the age of 80.
