More wind power is coming to the Big Island. GE is expected to be able to power 10,000 households with it’s newest wind farm being built in South Point on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Fourteen turbines are being built there and are expected to begin providing power to Island Residents by March of 2007. The wind turbines are 1.5 megawatt turbines built by GE. GE is financing the project and the power will be sold to the Hawaii Electric Ligh Company on the island of Hawaii (aka the Big Island).
There is currently a 9.3 megawatt windfarm on the Big Island which would basically be replaced by this new 21 megawatt windfarm.
The Big Island windfarm will join Maui’s newest wind farm which began operating this summer. That farm produces 30 megawatts of power for the island of Maui.
