Shave Ice is the best treat you can find on the island. Wherever you go, north, south, west or east side of the island, you’ll find someone, someplace selling shave ice.
All it is is ice with a sugary syrup on top. It’s hard to believe that you could go wrong with that combination. It’s hard to believe that you could screw it up, and chances are you can’t. We haven’t been to every place on the island but we’d imagine that you can’t screw it up. Every place we’ve had it it’s been delicious.
Probably the best shave ice place or most famous shave ice place is Matsumoto’s on the North Shore in Haleiwa. If you’re up there, you’ll notice it by the line that stretches into the parking lot. You’ll wait a good 30 minutes to an hour but it’s well woth the wait.

The earliest ever ‘ice creams’ in history were actually very similar to this… usually ice rushed down from a nearby mountain, then flavored with fruit or honey. Mmmmmm…
