First and foremost, I think it’s a great idea that Hawaii has put forth a law to ban smoking pretty much everywhere a business is located. That means no smoking at the mall, parking lots, restaurants, the airport…basically anything with a roof and two walls. This leaves the smokers only designated areas to smoke (at least 20 feet away from the door or window of an establishment), or in their house and car. I can breathe so much better already. But this is what bugs me. Since the anti-smoking law went into effect, I’ve noticed EVERYONE smoking in their car. I understand that since smokers are limited to the areas they can smoke, they will try to smoke freely in the areas they can, which includes their cars. Now, I don’t mind it so much, until they FLICK THEIR CIGARETTES out of their car or ONTO YOUR CAR while you are driving. This has happened on many occasions and it HAS TO STOP. First, you shouldn’t even be littering by throwing your cigarettes out the window. Doesn’t your car have an ashtray? USE IT. Secondly, don’t you think it’s disrespectful when you just flick your cigarette out the window? Please properly dispose of your cigarettes. Just because they are small objects, it doesn’t mean that they will quickly decompose back into the earth. In fact, cigarettes aren’t even biodegradable. While I’m not going to advocate smoking, I realize that it’s hard to quit and some people just don’t want to quit. But if you do smoke, please be respecful.

[...] According to the United Health Foundation, Hawaii was ranked number 4 as the healthiest state. You can see the complete list of healthy state rankings here, at the United Health Foundation website. Components range on a variety of health issues, including motor vehicle deaths, violent crimes, lack of health insurance, and infant mortality. The complete list of components can be found here. This is good news for our state of Hawaii, and hopefully we continue up the ranks. With the marathon coming up, a potential Whole Foods opening soon, the new anti-smoking law, and fitness rooms opening up in almost all the new condominiums currently being built, it seems we are going in the right direction. This should serve as a constant reminder that we should be more proactive with our health. Get out there and run, swim, or even take a stroll in the park. Find healthier food alternatives instead of fast food. Find ways to stop smoking. It will benefit us all in the long run. • • • [...]

Also… just had to mention… one childhood memory of growing up in hawaii was as a kid, I would find a lot of cigarette butts in the sand. Pretty sad to spoil the beauty that way with litter.

That’s just sad. You’d think people that live here and visit here would want to uphold the beauty more than that.
I find that trash, even in the ala wai, is just a sad turn of events for the waters and beaches of oahu and other hawaiian islands.
But on to the smoking law. Although it’s nice that they’re trying to help out our health. Now the smokers who would disperse themselves and smoke all over, condense on sidewalks and make basically a smoke screen that we non-smokers must walk through. I don’t know whats worse?
