Electric Rates May Increase

Seems like everything is getting more expensive these days. Just like my previous report on the increase in gas prices, Hawaiian Electric Company is putting in a request to increase our electricity rates. Rates are reported to increase about 7%, and if it passes, the rates will increase this coming fall.

The request was filed due to costs for large projects on top of regular maintenance throughout the island. To give an idea of what a typical household would pay with the increase, the Honolulu Advertiser has reported that a household using 600 kilowatts a month will be paying $117.85 instead of $111.05.

The Hawaiian Electric Company will reward those who take action in saving electricity by giving them lower rates. This means, START CONSERVING ENERGY NOW.

I also have a few pointers that will help you save electricity among other things. You can visit the link by clicking here to view the pointers. Start now, and you’ll be saving a bundle.

I would have thought that the increases were based on rising costs of raw materials needed to produce electricity, since usually there’s a direct correlation between rising gas prices and energy prices.

On another note, what are these “large projects” that seem to be one of the reasons for this increase? Will this mean that once these projects are completed, rates will return to what they are currently? I doubt it, but sometimes it’s good to ask these questions. :)

I wish I knew what the large projects were. As far as I know, it’s more about maintenance than anything else. Maybe make a more efficient power plant so when we have another power outage, we won’t be out of power for the entire day?

And I seriously doubt that rate will return to what they are currently after the projects are complete. I bet they still have to factor in maintaining those large projects, which will keep the costs up.
