According to the Honolulu Advertiser, Oahu’s traffic fatalities have risen to 90 deaths this year. This is much higher than the previous three years, with 78, 71, and 75 fatalities in 2005, 2004, and 2003, respectively. The age of deaths ranged from 15 to 69 years old.
I think everyone needs to slow down and be more aware of what’s going on while driving. I see people shaving, putting on makeup, combing their hair, etc, while driving. How can this be safe? OK, so maybe you’ve done those things a hundred times and have never got into an accident. Consider yourself lucky. Imagine if you caused an accident because of your carelessness. Would you be able to forgive yourself? Probably not.
The point is, we have to be aware of OTHERS while we drive. Speeding will get you to the red light faster. What’s the point? In the mean time, you’re putting other drivers and pedestrians in danger.
Why the road rage? You think it would help the other driver know that they did something wrong when you yell at them, cussing, or tailgating them? Maybe, but in the process you might cause another accident when you are focusing your efforts to yell at them, when you could just ignore them. Understandably, honk your horn if they cut you off too early and almost hit you. Give them a warning and be on your way.
Let’s all try to lower the traffic fatalities in Hawaii. Most are preventable, and with being a little more careful, we can save many unnecessary deaths.
