Repaving of Hawaii Roads

Finally! Repaving has finally started. Somehow our roads here on Oahu are horrible. Even when we pave new roads, after hard rain, the roads seem to just open up with potholes galore. And our patching jobs are even worse. Not only do they get BIGGER after they patch it and it rains, but they don’t even patch it smoothly. In fact, sometimes the patch feels worse than the potholes.

According to the Honolulu Advertiser, many roads will be repaved. Here is the list that they provided:

  • H-2 Freeway between Meheula Parkway and Waiawa Interchange (closed for drainage inspection today and thursday)
  • Farrington Highway between Hakimo Road and Kaukama Road (now to friday)
  • Farrington Highway in Waipahu from Old Fort Weaver Road to Kam Highway
  • Kam Highway between Waiahole Valley Road and Crouching Lion Inn
  • South-bound lane closed on Pu’uloa Road near Kam Highway
  • Aiea Access Road from Moanalua Road to Kam Highway for repavement
  • Halawa Heights Road between Ulune Street and Fernridge Place (around Camp Smith)
  • Kam Highway between Radford Drive and Halawa Drive for bikeway construction

The biggest one in my mind is the repaving of Nimitz Highway/Ala Moana Blvd from Fort Street to Pi’ikoi Street. I drive on this road a lot, especially since I work on Ala Moana Blvd. And let me tell you, the roads are HORRIBLE. It is somewhat understandable, because there are a lot of cars who drive on those roads. The Honolulu Advertiser reports 80,000 vehicles use Ala Moana Blvd each day. This is big news, because the roads need severe repaving. I’m glad the state is actually (and finally) fixing our roads, especially a heavily used one.

Let’s hope they fix it right this time, and that the roads will last a long time…even through the rain.
