According to the Honolulu Advertiser, the Honolulu Waldorf School located on Ulua Street, will expand its campus to include grades 9-12. They currently have 230 students from preschool to the eigth grade.
The proposal for the expansion will include a 2 story building about 10,000 square feet, and position it on the southwest corner of the campus. They plan to enroll 80-100 high school students to their new campus.
I used to live close to Niu Valley, and I think this is a great idea. The closest high school in that area is actually Kaiser High School which is about a 10 minute drive from the Niu Valley area. I think that when Waldorf completes their high school expansion, the community can choose to enter high school at Waldorf instead of moving to Kaiser High. Not only that, but the students who went to Waldorf will continue to be with their friends and a campus that they are used to.
Although 80-100 high school students don’t sound like a whole lot, and is about 1/3 the class size I had in high school, it is still a significant amount of students. I think this is good for the community of Niu Valley, and allows those who live in the area to attend school closer to them.
The project is slated to begin in 2008.
