Osake Sushi Bar and Lounge Fatality

Our orginal plan of going to Osake on Saturday night was interrupted when my friend called me later that night to tell me that a shooting had taken place the night before. While driving to our new destination that night, as expected, when I passed Osake, it was empty due to the previous night’s shooting.

A masked gunman entered the Osake Sushi Bar and Lounge on Kapiolani early Saturday morning through the kitchen door and ordered the cooks and employees into the lounge area. He shot a few rounds into the ceiling and wall then ordered everyone to the ground. Daniel Browne-Sanchez, a Hawaii deputy sheriff for 5 years, who also worked as an assistant bartender part time at Osake, attempted to subdue the gunman along with several other employees. The gunman fired at Sanchez and shot him in the chest, neck, and shoulder, where he eventually died Saturday afternoon.

The employees were able to hold the gunman down after the shooting until police arrived to take him away. Cameras there at the scene showed the gunman bruised and bloody when the police escorted him out, most likely due to the scuffle to subdue him. Records showed that the gunman had multiple arrests in the past as well as drug related convictions.

I normally walk past Osake on my way to the gym, and I never would have thought something like this would happen. An innocent life taken away for no reason at all. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sanchez and his family.
