Stiffer Penalities for Those Who Graffiti

The senate Judiciary Committee approved an anti-graffiti bill on Monday in hopes to lower the amount of vandalisim caused by graffiti. The bill makes the parents of minors involved in graffiti guilty and resposible for the crime, and for the adult offenders, the penalities will increase to a mandatory fine of $1000 and up, as well as jail time for repeat offenders.

The parents of the minors who cause the vandalism will not only take responsibility for their minor, but will also be billed with the clean-up costs necessary to rid of the graffiti. I know that penalizing the parents doesn’t seem like the most fair thing to do, but at the same time, punishing the parents might give the parents more incentive to keep a watchful eye over their child and know what he or she is up to.

I think the new bill is a good way to lower the amount of vandalism by graffiti in this state. This way, the parents will help to keep their kids from vandalizing public as well as private property, and on top of that, be required to clean up their child’s mess. And with definite jail time for repeat adult offenders, hopefully they will think twice before tagging another road sign or wall.
