Married Couple Victim of Possible Hate Crime in Waikele

As most of you might have already heard, a married couple were beat up near Baskin Robins at the Waikele Outlet Shopping Center last Monday.

According to the news as well as witnesses who called into radio station i-94 (FM 93.9), the married couple, Andrew and Dawn Dussell with their 3 year old child in the back seat, accidently hit a Chevrolet in the parking lot while pulling into a stall. Riding in the Chevrolet were Gerald D. Paakaula, 45, and his son. After the collision, Dawn came out of her car to apologize and pay for the damage. At the same time, Paakaula’s son came out of their car and started to kick the Dussell’s driver door, obviously angry at the damage done to his vehicle. Paakaula’s son also yelled out obscenities while kicking the driver’s door, calling Andrew a “f–king haole”.

Dawn tried to push Paakaula’s son away because he was damaging their car. At this time, Paakaula came out of the car and punched Dawn, then picked her off the ground and slammed her into the asphalt. Witnesses said she rolled under the car and was motionless, most likely unconscious. This is when her husband, Andrew stepped out of the car to rescue her. Paakaula then punched Andrew in the neck who fell to the ground trying to gasp for air. While on the ground, Paakaula’s son started to kick Andrew in the face which caused Andrew to then convulse.

According to the Honolulu Advertiser, Andrew suffered “fractures to the lower part of an eye socket and the maxillary sinus portion of his face” and Dawn suffered “fractures to her interior maxillary bone, nose and wrist”.

Some people on the radio tried to defend that what had happend wasn’t a hate crime. I for one, with the information given to me, believe it is a hate crime. If Paakaula’s son did not say “f–king haole”, then it might not be considered a hate crime, whether he liked caucasians or not. But the fact that the Dussell’s were caucasians probably caused Paakaula’s son to make the problem bigger than it actually is.

There is also the fact that we did not get to hear the Paakaula’s side of the story. Perhaps the Dussell’s instigated the situation by not cooperating and maybe said some things to Paakaula’s son that prompted him to say what he said. Regardless though, I think Paakaula’s son should not have said what he said, and because of that, this case may be considered a hate crime.

I honestly can’t believe what’s going on here sometimes. First the unfortunate shooting of Daniel Browne-Sanchez, and now an unfortunate senseless beating. Shape up people. Violence isn’t the answer and will never be the answer. And to find out that a female was picked up off the ground and slammed into the asphalt…there’s ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to justify such an action. If anything, Paakaula should serve some jail time or a penalty for committing such an unthinkable thing.

Sometimes it’s just better to walk away. Suck up your pride and maybe you’ll stay out of trouble.

[...] if possible hate crimes weren’t enough, the news of an 83 year old man stabbing his wife to death on Sunday boggles [...]

  2. Marsha Meinel Says:

This man, Gerald Paakaula is nothing more than a “wus”. I only read the article on the KHON TV website of the description of the crime committed by his son. Now, according to the article the elder Mr Paakaula was in Baskin Robbins and came running out and headed straight for the young lady, Dawn Dussel and struck her so hard that she was knocked unconscious while in the meantime her husband, Andrew Dussel probably coming out of his car to protect his wife was then attacked by both father (Gerald Paakaula) and son(Alika Paakaula). And, who took care of the baby (three years-old)while he/she had to witness this intolerable act of brutality being committed by two strange men to his/her parents.

In the same article an educator refers to this act possibly of “road rage” (UH Professor Leon James); it was more of a “hate crime”. Anyone ever heard the phrase, “the fruit does not fall too far from the tree…”. Both of these men should be incarcerated with both men doing community service in some abuse center for women (like cleaning their toilets, etc). This was an outright terroristic act committed by both Paakaula men and they are both a “danger” to society and an embarrassment to the Hawaiian community.

Shame on the Paakaula ‘ohana of Waianae!

  3. Donald Crandall Says:

“Maybe” he ought to serve jail time? Those cretins nearly beat two people to death-they deserve a LOT of jail time.

Hell, this is getting really good airplay here on the mainland. I’m sure that many haole will be watching to see if Hawai’i is safe for tourists and their money.

  4. Marsha L Meinel Says:

What is the latest on this case? Do we know? Can we find out? How?

  5. Kanaka Says:

Aloha. I used to work with Andrew Dussel. I worked with him on Fort Shafter. Andrew has always been a punk. I was not at the Waikele Shopping Center the day this happened, but I have been numerous other places where Dussel was around. Dussel has ALWAYS been the type to go out, get drunk and start fights. Looks like it finally caught up with him.

  6. Bob Says:

It sounds to me like kanaka is an angry local male that is trying to cover for Paakaula’s attack and racial epithets. I highly doubt if he knows the victims. And even if he does, the woman was beaten unconscious in front of a three-year-old child. What do you take a moment to think about how it would affect you to watch. The two people that have been put on this earth to protect you being beaten to a bloody pulp. You try being the child in the car watching your mother and father being beat to death. You’re an idiot. All reports state that the female victim was going out of her way to apologize. She was struck after pushing the kid away from her door. If you guys think this is not a racial crime or that violence in Hawaii is not out of control, you better take a long look at the history of this state. Or even more recently, three people that were beaten mercilessly this year waeanae alone. For the ignorant hawaiian, what these two guys did is a badge of honor. However, anyone with any common sense knows that this would not be the wish of Queen Liliuokalani. These people just perpetuate the racism, which absolutely DOES exist in this state. In my opinion, Hawaii should pass a concealed carry weapons law. I will bet you that Gerald and his son would not have been nearly as tough. If either of the victims Shoved a gun in their face. This is also a wake-up call for everyone in Hawaii to go down to your local fire arms supply and get yourself a can of nonlethal pepper spray. I can’t imagine the trauma that any father and mother would have to go through, or the child having witnessed such barbaric violence

  7. To Kanaka Says:

Mr Bob, i definately agree with you, and to Kanaka shame on you. I just got back from there on vacation with my family, and i could not imagine that happening to me. Those guys are lucky they did not run into me. Kanaka, if you are anative you should be lucky that we are going to your island pumping in a lot of revenue.

  8. to Bob and the rest Says:

According to what I have found out, the couple hit the car and was trying to flee the scene. The couple, not knowing that someone was in the car, tried to leave but the boy stopped them from taking off. The woman came out and started to yell at the youth and began to physically manhandle the child. The youth didn’t hit her back. The boys mother came out of Baskin Robbins but the uncontrollabe and irational woman began to beat on her too. Fear of the two white me, both trained soldiers, stood there threateningly, watching the senseless act of violence against the local family. The father, with the ice cream, came to the aid of his family, like any protective husband and father would do.
The injuries were on both sides. The catalyst was the “hit and try to run” white couple. They may be a military family but was not acting on behalf of all hardworking military so should be seen as such. The youth may have yelled “fuckin haole” after, AFTER, getting hit and trying to detain the fleeing couple but is no worse than any American that would have reacted in the same capacity and with the same slang words that a local would have in another part of America. I guess it would have been better for the “youth” to have called them “fuckin stupid asses!”
Now as for the person who signed in as “To Kanaka” and how “thankful” us natives should be for the revenue that the non native is pumping into our islands, you should know that the car you rented, the gas you filled your rental with, hotel room you stayed in, the land under the hotel, the high and low end shopping that you did, the airplane ticket that you bought are all owned by non natives most likely white, such as yourself, or asian.
So to all of you who wrote try to do more research before commenting, research is more than reading one page on the internet. Look at the violence that you have had like, Columbine, Bob, mister “I bet they wouldn’t be so tough if a gun was shoved in their face.” Is guns the answer? What about the bravado of “To Kanaka” and his retort, “Those guys are lucky they did not run into me.” All of you are threatening violence, but doesn’t violende beget violence? Think before you act and write, gentlemen.

  9. Hapa Haole Says:

I am born and raised in Hawaii. People always used to mistake me for being Hawaiian because I was dark and Hapa Haole. But I always be sure to tell people I’m not Hawaiian because I respect the Hawaiians. Haoles need to understand that. Most of them don’t.

I used to surf at Sandys all the time. Full Point, Half Point, and Pipe Littles. Sometimes I body surf at gas chambers when I didn’t have my board. I went to Kaiser and always went to the beach after school. “WE GO SUUURRRFF!” I’m saying all this so anyone from Hawaii knows I’m not bullsheting.

But even so. The Paakaula assualted the two people. As much as I try to think they deserved it(WHICH THEY USUALLY DO) I know that there is no excuse for hitting someone. Most of the time the mainlanders get hit by Hawaiians because they offended them or disrespected them. I’ve been to Cali and I see how Haoles treat other races there. They look down on them. They talk to them like they are lesser beings. They disrespect. And then they come here and do that sh!t. They get a rude awakening. I have no doubt that is what happened here. If you think Hawaiians are just mindless animals then you would be what we call ‘dumb haole.’ Meaning ignorant. You mainland people provoke the situation. You looks down on the Hawaiians and disrespect them in their home. Do you walk into other peoples homes and disrespect the family that lives there? That is what you’re doing when you come here. Every local in Hawaii is a member of a the family. You mess with one Hawaiian you mess with the family which is the entire island. You come to the islands and don’t even see the family. You see the profit and the money. And so you steal it. As tourists you see us locals as servants to SERVE YOU to give you a better vacation. You walk around all like you’re better than us. Now you understand why the Hawaiians tell you to get off the island. They are saying get out of my house. Get out of my home. If you come and you understand this then you will have no problems.

But even so the Paakaula father and son are wrong. They beat a couple to the ground and put them in a hospital. One of them was a woman. This is unacceptable and they definitely crossed the line. As much as I hate the ignorant people that come here I can’t defend these 2. They are wrong plain and simple and are being punished for their crimes. And for the Hawaiians that can’t accept that think about old days. The Ali’i would have them executed.

  10. d. abrue Says:

What is with this haole disrespecting Hawaiians in their home stuff.Get off your high horse. If anybody is disrespected in Hawaii it is primarily the haolies. What were the Dussells suppose to do just let the Hawaiian family kick their car and shout racist slurs at them after a simple fender bender that could happen to anybody, but hey don’t say anything to defend yourself because that would be disrespecting the Hawaiians. Lets face it they were disrespecting the Hawaiians just by being there. When I lived in Hawaii as a child I learned that Hawaiians will look for any reason to show you how much respect they are entitled to (by this I mean beating up anyone for what they perceive is a sign of disrespect). You must not think to highly of yourself as a people if you get “disrespected” and “insulted” so easily. A Hawaiian can behave in any mean or rude manner they want and a haole is supposed to shut up and take it. If a haole so much as defends their right to be treated with respect the Hawaiian calls this ignorant and disrespectful. Give me a break. No wonder most of you remain in the same conditions generation after generation. Stop blaming the haole for all your problems and look within your own community. I think it’s more about Hawaiians excepting people who are different and not the other way around!

  11. Bo Says:

This is exactly what every married couple deserves.

  12. Patricia Says:

    Hey Hapa Haole,

It’s quite obvious by reading your message that you harbor some hatred towards other groups and believe me hon, you’re not doing a good job at concealing this. On one hand, you say that these visiting haoles did not deserve what they got; yet, I see that on the same note that haoles are the rudest people. I’ll tell you whose rude here. It’s ignorant people like you and this is no exception. You definitely have a very bad attitude.

At no time, regardless of what race, assaulting another is very inexcusable and something that needs to be taken very seriously. Hey, let me address this: my parents were both born and raised on the Island and since my father’s hapa haole, he’s been raised to respect people of all races and the same with my mother.

The two guys that assaulted the couple in front of their 3-year-old child deserves to be put in jail. Their behavior was completely uncalled for.

  13. Patricia Says:

Bo, grow up why don’t you.

  14. taimana Says:

Yes physical violence is wrong. So was trying to run away from a hit and run. People from the United States who come to Hawaii need to understand, respect is everything. Especially after everything your country has done to Hawaii’s people, we have no tolerance for your attitude and walking around thinking you are better than everyone. Keep in mind that you and your actions are representatives of wherever you come from. When you come here, we do not see you as one of us, therefore you ARE guests in our homes. Show some respect or get the hell out.

  15. big haole Says:

I will be in your stinking islands soon. Not because I want to. I’d rather visit East L.A. 7 days in your “paradise” Once will be enough. I just hope me and my boys can show you beach negros the “resect” you deserve.

  16. big haole Says:

    taimana

Everything that MY country has done? MY government is doing the same to me too.
But you hawaiians need to understand something. WE ARE BETTER THAN YOU! you need to show respect to us. We are high and mighty and when we visit 3rd world people like you, you need to lick our boots.

  17. taimana Says:

Only an idiot would leave a comment like that. Talk so much shit but hide behind your computer. united snakes of america, you even got a snake on your flag.

  18. big haole Says:

    taimana

Hiding? haha. I won’t be hiding when I come to your shit hole of a world and shit on you little people who are begging for my big wad of cash. You and your people will act like the whores you really are and kiss my ass to get it. Small price I have to pay to be called names :)

  19. big haole Says:

BTW, I’m a Canadian. Theres more than the yanks out there that dont want or need your lil “jewel” of an island.

  20. TIRED-OF-ALL-THIS-HATE Says:

    WOW!!!!!

There is a lot of HATE out there!!!

First, is being ignorant a good reason to be attacked? Maybe some/most of the white people (Americans, Canadians, Europeans) who come to Hawaii ARE ignorant. So what? Somebody “disrespects” you, and you beat them? Why not just disrespect them back? They call you fat, call them ugly, and so on…

Second, there is A LOT of pent up hostility among the native Hawaiian/”local” community. BTW, “local” means non-white, so even if you are born here, if you are white, you will never be “local”. Numerous injustices have been committed against the Hawaiian people, and some of them where done by whites… so now, in 2008, the people who are angry see whites coming to Hawaii, spending money, having fun, and not understanding much about the indigenous culture… most toursits don’t have the faintest clue that this problem even exists. Meanwhile, the angry Kanakas and “locals” find this ignorance offensive - and from time to time the rage explodes.

As with most injustices, the people who did the ‘crime’, i.e., separating the Hawaiian from his/her land (the Hawaiian Ali’i and many caucasians) ARE ALL DEAD!
So the self-perceived ‘victims’ blame any caucasian (after all, they are ALL guilty, right???) but NEVER the Ali’i - go figure.

Solution? I do not see an easy one. The ‘disrespect’ will continue. Hawaii’s cost of living is skyrocketing, putting more stress on people living in Hawaii. The angry people will still be angry, so no solution in sight.

Oh, this is for BIG HAOLE: YOU ARE AN IDIOT. OR TOTALLY RETARDED. WHY DO YOU BAIT PEOPLE LIKE THAT? I put you in the same category as the Paakaula family. They are ignorant and violent, you are ignorant AND a race-baiter. They may be curable, but your brand of hate tends to live on. You are probably a faliure, with a small dick and a lot of regrets. GET OVER IT!!! AND SHUT THE F— UP! Would you talk like that if the people you are baiting could see your face?

TO KANAKA: Deal with your wounded pride and ego, but in other ways. THIS is not the way. I have reviewed the court documentation on this case, and the Dussell’s were not trying to run away. Unfortunately, you are letting a small number of bad experiences alter your attitude towards a whole race of people. Just like sometimes the Hawaiian is the victim, THIS one time, the Hawaiian was at fault. Let it be what it is - don’t try to make it into something bigger

I HOPE ALL THE HATERS ON BOTH SIDES GET HELP SOON. I like living in Hawaii, but I see this name calling and race-bating as a total waste of time.

HAHA. talk of penises.. fag. I still shit on the locals and would shit down your throat if I ever saw you. I have no regrets for anything. I’ve decided not to give my money to the hate mongers on hawaii. I’m going to europe instead now. Too bad I wont be coming over to see you poor shits lick my as for my money.

  23. paakuala means "Big Ugly Pussy" Says:

Sorry, but Haole is not an offensive word to white people. After all it means ” a white person”. There is no racial slur to offend a white person, b/c we are proud to be white. Maybe other races should take note b/c we control your mind when we call another race with a slur, they lose all control and fly off the handle. So it is more likely that other races are self hating, bc they are prob. too lazy to accomplish anything.
Oh im sure the white folks were trying to pull a hit and run over a fender-bender. Whatever. Im sure they had much more money than the Hawaiian thugs. ANY man who beats up a woman is a coward and a pathetic pussy. You’re going to talk about this story and then say we should respect Hawaiians? Being born Hawaiian doesn’t make you special, just fat and ugly. True Hawaiians only account for 20% of the people so good luck island n*****. Haole is here to stay. And if you continue to act like niggers, you shall be treated like one. Why don’t the island n**** and other n**** start their own club were the can sit around eating pineapple and watermelon and bitch and whine about how the white man took everything from them HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO. So how many hundreds of years does it take for you to make something of yourself? Will you ever take responsibility for your own worthlessness? You have the same opportunitys as white people. But you would rather sit around on your ass and blame someone else fro your lack of intelligence, work ethic, and hygiene. Many many years have passed and the hawaiians have proved to be as ignorant and stupid as their ancestors, who by the way are the ones who gave up their islands. And if you hate whitey so much, why don’t you stop using anything made, bought, or sold by White people. Or stop working with or for them. Then see how far your culture makes it. Even though im sure they couldnt manage without. So just continue to fling your arms and legs towards the heads of of whites and maybe that will work. But eventually white people will stop feeling sorry for you, and then you will reap the whirlwind.
