The news and radio reported a 52 year old man, Frank Montayre, falling from the 46th floor of the newly built Moana Pacific Condomiums twin towers just yesterday a little before 10am. He was reportedly caulking the lanai on the 46th floor when he fell to his death.
The radio show also reported that Montayre did not have to caulk the 46th floor lanai because that floor was already completed. Because of miscommunication, Montayre continued to caulk the highest floor of the condo until he fell to his death.
The other problem was that Montayre was not tied to the safety line. Now this is a problem. To be that high, no matter how confident you are in your skills, you should always put safety first. It is sad that he had to fall to his death because of possible carelessness. The rule for construction workers is that if they are above six feet, they must wear safety gear. But that is still up to the discretion of the construction worker, and not required.
Let’s pray for Montayre and his family. Hopefully there will not another tragedy like this again.

What a terrible tragedy. I can’t help wondering whether giving the worker the “choice” allows employers to avoid their responsibilities. Surely employers should have to ensure the safety of their employees. If this happened in Australia the employer would be prosecuted.
