I recently wrote about how to size an outrigger paddle and what else you can look at besides just putting the paddle under your armpit and seeing where you get. Just remember there are a few more things you can do and measuring from a seated position is probably the best way to go.
Now on to the next step! You need to buy an outrigger paddle. If you live on the island of Oahu, where I live, I can help you out. If you live on another island, I’ll look into it. If you live on another island and know where to get one, please leave a comment and let us know where to buy an outrigger paddle on other Hawaiian islands.
As for Oahu, you can buy an outrigger paddle at a lot of places. The place where I bought my outrigger canoe paddle is on Craigslist at the Oahu Craigslist sporting goods section. This is probably the best place to find a cheap paddle without going to a club and asking around. You won’t get the expertise of a store clerk who might be able to size a paddle for you but you may be able to get an oversized paddle and just get it chopped, and for a lot less.
Another place you can get a great paddle is at Island Paddler on Kapahulu. This is probably the place where everyone goes to get a paddle. Most clubs head over here and get their newbies sized and fitted for an Outrigger paddle. If you know you’re going to be in the sport for a while, go here. You’ll be happy you did.
You can also head right up Kapahulu to Go Banana’s and get a paddle. They have some great beginner paddles where you won’t spend so much money on them and you can get into the sport. This is where my paddle originally came from.
There are more places than just these few and I’m sure I’ll be writing about a few more. But check these out and let us know how they work.
