So last night I went to a restaurant called Town located in Kaimuki. It sits on the corner of Waialae Ave and 9th Ave, and parking in located behind the restaurant. Now I have to say I’ve heard a lot of good things about this restaurant, but it turned out to be much better than I thought.
Town prides themselves in making all their dishes from organic foods. Everything that we ordered tasted extremely fresh. All their dishes are somewhat exotic, and they serve everything including pasta, seafood, chicken, and steaks.
The atmosphere of Town is very similar to bistros on the mainland. In fact, at times I felt as if I was eating in a bistro in Santa Monica. It’s a very cozy place with steel tables and dim lighting. Each table is also accompanied by a small candle that can make the place somewhat romantic as well. The chairs and benches are all wooden which were surprisingly comfortable since none of them have cushions. There are also various types of artistic pictures on the walls.
I was told that the menu changes constantly as well as the prices, but the prices were all relatively reasonable. Appetizers run from $6-9 and salads from $8-11. Entrees vary, but range from $14-26. Their homemade desserts are $6 each with sorbets and gelatos at $3 each. They also have a wine list and serve various beverages, including their famous freshly squeezed lemonade with mint, honey, and parsley juice that I was fortunate enough to order.
All tables include various types of bread which was also served with two types of olives and butter. The bread was fantastic, but if you want an additional serving, it will cost you another $2. For some reason though, we got another serving for free.
We started with a salad that included pine nuts, arugula (which was spectacular by the way), bacon, and some sort of light balsamic vinegarette. It was a nice light salad and the organic greens were not bitter like some other organic salads I have eaten before.
I then ordered the ribeye steak which was HUGE. They also threw a large pile of fries, which I think were probably the best I’ve ever eaten. They were thin cut and fried to a point where they were crispy and more brownish than golden. They also tasted fresh and not like frozen fries. The steak was also served with a side of nalo greens with a light vinegarette. The steak was cooked perfectly with rock salt, butter, and a hint of bleu cheese. Probably one of the top 5 steaks I’ve ever eaten.
My guest ate the mahi mahi special, which was served over a bed of vegetables. The mahi mahi was cooked very well and flaked off perfectly. The size of the fish was also generous, and looked as thick as filet mignon but as wide as a CD. The vegetables also tasted very fresh and was overall very satisfying.
When we finished our entrees, we ordered two desserts. One was a strawberry tart and the other was a vanilla gelato. The strawberry tart was excellent with about 4-5 whole pieces of strawberry over a chocolate covered crust, topped with whipped cream. The strawberry sauce that went over the entire tart was the most excellent strawberry sauce I’ve ever ate. The vanilla gelato came in two scoops into a cup with an oatmeal cookie on top. The gelato had a texture very similar to Haggen Daz ice cream, but was a perfect complement to the strawberry tart.
Overall, the total cost of our meal was a little less than $70 for two, but included one lemonade, one salad, two entrees, and two desserts. It was well worth the money.
