“Icon Sport - Epic” Results

Sorry for the late posting on the results for this incredible MMA card…the fight ended a little after 11pm and I was too tired to post up the results.

Anyhow, this card lived up to its hype.  All the main bouts were very exciting with all the favorites winning except for the main event.

Jeremy “Half Man Half Amazing” Williams took on Charles Jones.  Charles came out charging and went for the take down since wrestling was his specialty.  Jeremy hit him a few times hard enough to knock me out, but Charles endured and did not look phased.  Jeremy came out on top by hitting Charles with multiple body shots.  At one point, Jeremy threw an elbow from the bottom with Charles mounted, and it looked to be that Charles was knocked out.  The ref stopped the match telling Jeremy that the elbow was illegal and started the match again.  This time, Charles looked completely exhausted and just fell to the ground after Jermey came in for the kill.  Jeremy wins due to Charles inability to continue from exhaustion in the third round.

Poai Suganuma, the newest hype coming from Hawaii faced Nate Carey.  As much as I was looking forward to Poai, he didn’t do as good as I expected.  Poai was able to throw Carey to the canvas a few times, but definitely had diffculty taking down the much taller Carey.  Many thought Carey won the fight since he landed more shots from the mount, but it was Poai who won an unanimous decision.

Jason “Mayhem” Miller looking to come back after his disappointing loss to Frank Trigg just a few months ago, took it out on Hector Urbina with a TKO win.  Mayhem had great standup, and picked his shots very well.  Mayhem caught Urbina with a combination that put Urbina to the ground where Mayhem capitalized and ground and pounded Urbina until the referee stopped the bout in the first minute of the first round.

Chaurto showed why he is the best at what he does, now that he has quit his landscaping job and now trains out of BJ Penn’s MMA out in Hilo full time.  Lars Haven came out throwing punches nonstop trying to catch the UFC vetern, but Charuto eventually took Lars down where he ended up in half guard.  Charuto transitioned to full mount and began to reign down a multitude of punches that forced the referee to stop the fight at 2:09 of the first round.

In the fight of the night, “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler came prepared to face Icon’s Middleweight Champion Frank “Twinkletoes” Trigg.  In the first round, Trigg immediately went for the takedown, most likely to keep from standing with Robbie and his dynamite hands.  Robbie fell into the butterfly guard where Frank was not able to pass, ultimately not landing any good shots to Robbie on the ground.  Most of the first round was Frank trying to capitalize on the ground, but was not able to get passed Robbie’s butterfly guard.

In the second round, Robbie was able to knock down Trigg with a cross from his left hand.  Most expected Robbie to rush Trigg while he was on the ground and punish him, but Robbie calmly walked over then proceeded to punch Trigg on the ground a few times.  It looked as if he was trying to conserve energy and not gas out, or possibly get into a bad situation, especially since the fight was five five minute rounds.

After the fighters stood back up, Robbie knocked Trigg back down in the same round with a knee that caused Trigg to start bleeding.  The ref stopped the bout to allow the doctors to check the cut before restarting the match.  The rest of the round continued with standup going back and forth.

In the third round, both fighters looked completely exhausted, with both fighters throwing very weak and slow punches and kicks.  They almost looked like they were light sparring in the ring.  A few times, there was a flurry of punches by both fighters, but then resumed back to sloppy punches and kicks.  Trigg was able to get Robbie in trouble a few times, and it looked as if Robbie might get knocked out, but Trigg was too exhausted to follow up and finish the fight.

In the fourth round, both fighters still looked exhausted, but Trigg decided to push the pace and move forward and tried to win the standup war.  Trigg then tried to take Robbie down with no success.  Robbie put Trigg to the corner of the ring and with what looked like his last surge of energy, unleashed a 4-5 combo of punches that completely knocked out Trigg.  In fact, Trigg was lying on the ground for at least 5 minutes.  He was escorted out of the ring with his teammates and could not walk out by himself.  Lawler is now a 2 time Icon Sport Middleweight Champion.

In other news, a lot of fighters showed up to the event.  I was able to see UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture, Pride Middleweight Champion Dan Henderson, UFC Veteran Jens “Little Evil” Pulver, John Lewis (one of Chuck Liddell’s trainers), Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and none other than the one and only BJ Penn.  They also interviewed all theses fighters (minue John Lewis) during the intermission.  Rampage gave his usual hilarious comments and talked about knocking out Chuck in their rematch.  BJ gave his two cents about Jens, and talked about completely dominating Jens in their rematch in June in the UFC.

The rest of the card results are posted below:

Duane Haney wins in round 2 by submitting Devon Damo with a triangle choke.

Ryan Lee defeats Jay Bolos with a unanimous decision.

Scott Anderson defeats PJ Dean with a unanimous decision.

Kimo Wolfel defeats Dereck Keasley in a war with a unanimous decision.

Kala Kolohe Hose knocks out Ron Verdadero with a punch that had Ron falling out of the ring in the first 38 seconds of the first round.

Justin Buchholz also knocked out Marshall Harvest in the first round after only 31 seconds with punches.
