If you find yourself jay-walking, watch out especially if you are in the downtown or Ala Moana area. Undercover police are watching and if they catch you jay-walking, you can be fined $70-80. The officers will be in plain clothes and will walking along the streets. The TV even showed some police officers sitting on a bench reading a newspaper with holes cut out so they can see who is jay-walking.
OK, now this seems a bit ridiculous. Sure, people are getting hit because they are jay-walking. Some have died too, which is very unfortunate. But to put a bunch of our police force to catch jay-walkers? Come on! There are MANY other criminals out there that the cops should be catching. Instead of patrolling our streets for criminals or catching the most wanted, they are sitting on the bench pretending to read the newspaper so they can nab one of you people who jay-walk.
I’ll admit that jay-walking isn’t the smartest thing to do. It is in fact dangerous and you could be putting more than just yourself in danger. And I think it is a decent idea to put SOME undercover cops on the street to catch repeat offenders, but to seriously send out a team of undercover cops to just catch jay-walkers? What a waste of time and resources.
Even Dog the Bounty Hunter’s daughter was fined for jay-walking in downtown (as I heard on 102.7 FM this morning). At least they aren’t favoring celebrities. The only good I see from this is that the enforcing of police on the streets and the fine for jay-walking will deter some would-be jay-walkers from crossing the street illegally. That is the only benefit I see for this fight against jay-walking. But how long will this last? I’m sure it might deter some for a while, but jay-walkers WILL come back. It WILL happen again.
It is also up to us to keep the police from wasting our tax-paying money. Please, just walk on the crosswalk. Wait until the light turns to green then cross the street. If we obey the law, the city wouldn’t have to go to these ridiculous and money wasting measures to stop jay-walkers. It’s really not that important that you get to where you need to go a few minutes faster. Just wake up earlier. It’s as simple as that. Don’t do everything last minute. This way you can take your time and get to where you need to go without breaking the law. Let’s do our part, and maybe the police can get back to doing their real jobs.
