Sandy Beach Cleanup

To coincide with Earth Day, Sandy Beach got a cigarette and trash cleanup this past Saturday.  According to the Honolulu Advertiser, about 130 volunteers showed up for the cleanup and was able to pick up an estimated 5228 cigarette butts along with 40 large bags of trash.  Smokers who did show up received a free reusable container to hold their cigarette butts so they would not throw it on the ground or on the sand.

This is ridiculous people.  Do you think that people will pick up after your trash?  Throw your trash in the trash can.  Be responsible for your own cigarettes.  Do you think our beaches will look nice if you littered it with trash and cigarette butts?  It’s not a dump, it’s a beach.  Hawaii is known for their beautiful beaches.  If you are going to use Hawaii’s beaches, be respectful and take care of it.

The cleanup was organized by the Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawaii (B.E.A.C.H.), who is a nonprofit organization.  Thank goodness for organizations like this to keep the beaches clean.  The trucks that clean up the beaches don’t get everything.  Sometimes it takes people to get out there and do the clean up themselves.  And thank goodness for the volunteers who take the time out of their own schedule to take care of Hawaii’s beaches.  The deserve applause.

If you are interested in helping out, they will be another Sandy Beach cleanup this coming Saturday from 3-5pm.  You can contact those below if interested (source: Honolulu Advertiser):
