As I was driving back to my parent’s house for dinner last night, I drove past the Chevron gas station in Koko Marina and was just completely floored to see regular octane gas at $3.19 a gallon. Are you serious? That’s just appalling. What’s going on these days?
But, to give Chevron credit, they did position their gas station at a perfect location. Anyone who passes Koko Marina on their way to Hawaii Kai or Hanauma Bay will pass Chevron. Around the corner, there’s a 76 gas station that’s usually empty, and their price for regular octane gas was $3.07. That’s a 12 cent difference per gallon. Now I’m sure 76 prices their gasoline lower to compete with Chevron’s location. Chevron on the other hand is always packed with cars. If people only knew 76 was literally a 45 second drive away on the other side, 76 will be lined up with cars. And don’t act like 12 cents a chump change. Ask all those who line up at the Costco gas station, and they’ll tell you every cent counts.
So in retrospect, I think I made a good decision selling my old car (an Infiniti G35 coupe) and getting my Acura RSX. The Infiniti took only premium gas and had a 20 gallon tank. To make matters worse, by driving in the city every day to and from work, I was only able to get an average of 15.5 miles per gallon. That’s just horrible. Now, my Acura requires only regular octane gas, and I get a respectable 25 miles per gallon in the city. That really puts money back into my wallet. And with gas prices getting this high, I think I made the right choice.
I just remembered only a little while ago, premium gas was around $3.19…ahhhhh, the price to live in paradise…again.

A lot of places seem to be catching up to Hawaii. Last time I was back on the mainland I saw $3 for gas. That’s crazy talk! Now they’re saying look out for $4 gasoline!
