Kajeet, a new “pay-as-you-go” cell phone, has just announced that they have built a relationship with Longs Drugs stores in Nevada, California, and our very own Hawaii, to allow Longs to carry and sell their cell phones.
OK, now most of us, if not all of us, own a cell phone. So why would you go and purchase a Kajeet? Well, a “pay-as-you-go” cell phone has a lot of benefits over a normal cell phone, especially if you don’t use your cell phone a lot. For one, as far as charges go, you don’t pay for anything except for the phone and the amount of minutes you want on your phone, much like a calling card. This means there are no contracts, no activation or termination fees, no roaming fees, and no hidden charges.
Who are they really targeting though? The phone is actually made to be used by kids and teenagers who might not be able to handle the money, rules, limits, minutes, and access that normally comes with a cell phone and their respective wireless provider. Not only does it keep the parents in control with the way their kids use a cell phone, but it also allows the parents to keep in contact with their children in case of an emergency.
So why Longs Drugs? Well, c’mon now…we ALL shop there. Longs is definitely a default place to purchase anything…from food to, well, drugs. And with most families stopping by Longs to make their purchase, they will have easy access to the Kajeet phone. But don’t think it’s just any old phone. Kajeet has made an agreement with LG to use their LG LX150 phone at all the Longs Drugs locations. For $49.99, the phone in a flip phone that also includes Bluetooth technology built in. Minutes can also be purchased at Longs for your Kajeet phone, which is a good place to stop by when you need to purchase some cereal and you need to also refill your minutes.
I think this is a good move by Kajeet, and Longs Drugs is a perfect place to put it, especially in Hawaii. But only time will tell if “pay-as-you-go” phones will survive.
