Click It or Ticket on May 21st to June 3rd

Beginning May 21st, the Click It or Ticket campaign will start and end on June 3rd.  During these few weeks, police from all four counties will be setting up check points to make sure you buckle up your seatbelt while driving.

So what happens if you get caught?  You will get a ticket with a fine to pay $92.  There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it.  This doesn’t only apply to drivers and front seat passengers though.  If you are under the age of 18 and don’t wear a seatbelt, you will also be fined $92.

Just last year, according to the Honolulu Advertiser, 2400 tickets were issued to people not wearing a seatbelt in all four counties.  It’s not that we’re doing bad, with about 92% of all people wearing seatbelts in 2006, but it did drop from 95.2% in 2005.

Still yet, I can’t see why people just don’t wear their seatbelts.  I know a few people who don’t wear their seatbelt, and the main reason is comfort.  They just don’t like to feel restrained, and would rather spend the money on a ticket than put on their seatbelt.  This doesn’t make sense to me, but I guess I don’t feel restrained with a seatbelt on.  After a while, you just don’t feel it anymore.

In any case, for all of you out there who aren’t putting on your seatbelts, maybe it’s time to start.  If you don’t, you might find yourself coughing up $92.

I’ve been in 2 serious accidents, one a t-bone and another a head-on collision. I was wearing my seatbelt in both both accidents. Thank the good Lord that I was able to walk away from both of them with out serious injury. I shutter to think what sort of condition I might have been in if I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt. After the t-bone accident, my parents took a look at the totaled car and were amazed that I survived. That was enough motivation for them to start wearing their seatbelts.
