Amuse Wine Bar at the Design Center

Intrigued by the wine tasting at the newly opened Amuse Wine Bar at the Design Center on Kapiolani and Pi’ikoi, a couple of us went after work to give it a shot.  The wine bar is located on the second floor of the Design Center next to the Stage restaurant.

When you first arrive, you see wine stations sorted by red and white wines, with spouts above each wine.  Above each spout is a price which ranges from 89 cents to around $20.  This is the cost for 1 oz of the respective wine.  To access each wine, you need to give the waiter your credit card, which he then hands you a card that keeps record of your tab, which is then charged to your credit card.

On top of the wines, we also ordered some appetizers.  We ordered a fresh bread basket ($7), a marinated spare ribs dish ($13), and a cheese platter dish ($12).  The fresh bread wasn’t even warm, but it did come with 10 different types of bread along with some butter.  The cheese platter was rather disappointing for the price, because it came with 3 types of cheese, with two of the cheeses served the size of a pack of matches cut into two.  It was also served with paper thin slices of apples and some nuts.  There was also a line of raspberry sauce on the edge of the plate that no one seemed to notice until all the cheese was gone.  Lastly, the recommended marinated spare ribs dish came in a small pot, and consisted of 5 pieces of spare ribs.  Sadly, it tasted like the stewed pork and was very bland.  To give them some credit, the meat did fall off the bone really easily.

It is safe to say that I probably will not be returning to Amuse.  It is very contemporary, but for the price, if you can afford it, spend it on the wine but not on the food.  Give it a shot…maybe you’ll like it!
