My favorite Korean restaurant, Sorabol.

When I lived in Providence, RI, good Korean food was very very difficult to come by.  So I loved it when I went to Virginia to visit my parents.  I could have my mom’s scrumptious food or go out to great Korean restaurants in the area.  When I moved to Hawaii two years ago, I had a high expectation for Korean food since a lot of Koreans live here.  Then I realized that most of Korean food was sort of rearranged into a unique style of dishes here in Hawaii.  Although it was interesting, I could have so much of ”meat-jun” or fake kimchee.

The first and probably the only Korean restaurant that I was not disappointed with was Sorabol.  It is located at the corner of Keeaumoku and Rycroft across from Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart.  It is a big restaurant, so it should be very hard to miss it.  They have a fairly big parking lot on Rycroft St.  However, the lot is usually full, so is the restaurant.  There is a valet parking, and you can pay them 2-3 dollars for it when you pick up your car.

The restaurant is pretty clean, and the service is okay.  Those Korean waitress are working at a really high pace, so make sure that you grab their attention if you need anything.  There is a button that you can press to get service, but they usually don’t respond to that at all or not fast enough.  The waitresses can be intimidating, but they are very willing to help you any time for anything.

My recommendations are mostly BBQ stuff.  It is best to cook the meat yourself right on the table; it adds excitement to your dining experience.  Definitely try Kalbi; it would be the best meat you can have at Sorabol.  Make sure you order seasoned green onion and wrap it with your meat in lettuce.  Their butter fish stew is also excellent, and it complements Kalbi very well.  Beware though, it is pretty spicy.  If you are spicy food lover, you would be in heaven, and your taste buds would thank you for it.  A great appetizer would be seafood pancake.  It is cripy outside and chewy inside with lots of seafood.  Dip it in the sauce and taste the epitome of Korean appetizer.  OB beer would be a great drinik to down all these korean food as well.  I wouldn’t order their sushi though; they are not quite authentic.

Wear something casual, so you don’t get the BBQ smell all over your favorite clothing.  If you look into the Paradise Yellowpage, you will find 5% off coupon.  So use it.  Now go and enjoy an exciting dining experience; maybe you will sit next to me someday.

If you like the seafood pancake here, try Sogongdong at the McCully Shopping Center. Their seafood pancake is out of this world. Besides that, Sorabol does make better kalbi.
