For all your old school people out there, or people who love to watch independant and/or art movies, one of the oldest theaters is Hawaii is finally closing. Yes, Varsity Theaters on University Ave. closes after 67 years in business. So why has this happened? Well, if you really think about it, not many places can hold their own if they exclusively show only independant films…this is evident by Restaurant Row’s theathers which changed to a $1 theater after the independant movie theater couldn’t survive. And while all the other theaters have stadium seating with the best in surround sound, most independant movie theaters, like Varsity Twins, don’t have this luxury.
I remember watching some independant films at Varsity for school papers. I’ve also occasionally watched some films for my own enjoyment as well. Especially since Restaurant Row got rid of their independant movie theater, there was really no where to go, except for maybe the small theater in Kaimuki. I guess with large popular movie theaters like the one at Ward, which I expect makes the most money here, smaller theaters just don’t have a chance. This is sad, because most of the independant films never show at the bigger theaters. Once in a while Ward and Kahala theaters show independant films, but usually with limited show times. And Dole Theaters is the same, unless it is the Film Festival. Thank goodness for that, otherwise there would be no place to catch these types of movies. Still yet, that’s only once a year, so it’s hard to come by.
I guess everything has to come and go one day…
