Varsity Theaters, Ebisu Catering, what’s next?

Varsity Theaters and Ebisu Catering…  So many local businesses are going out of business.  We care so much about how many tourists we get every QAUTER and how much business they bring.  Where is this kind of level of attention to our local businesses, especially businesses like Varsity Theaters and Ebisu Catering that had a great impact in local’s lifestyle?

Being from Washington, D.C. area originally , I would say there isn’t much truly cultural activity available in Oahu.  I can’t deny that we have some of the best beaches in the world, and we have the best weather.  However, when it comes to museums, galleries, theaters, we are pretty behind.  I never had a previlage to enjoy the Varsity Theater myself, but I truly value the importance of independent films, and I am a big fan of them.  I guess I will never get to enjoy independent film regularly here except during film festivals across the islands.

Honestly, I never ate at the Ebisu Catering before.  However, the impression I got from the news coverage was that the eatery was very dear to the heart of many many people on Oahu.  With all that local business they had, they still could not afford rents.  I wonder how high the rent is!  It’s not just business rent that is at risk here.  Even condiminium rents are skyrocketing in Honolulu as well.  Even with double incomes between husband and wife, many people still can’t afford to rent a decent place in town.

It’s defintely good to pay attention to the tourism business in Hawaii because it really sustains our island economy.  But don’t forget to pay close attention to the local business as well that is the foundation of our islands.  Tourists come and go, but local businesses stay here for us.
