BJ Penn to Fight This Saturday

Hilo’s own BJ Penn will be fighting this Saturday in Las Vegas against a man who defeated him back in 2002, Jens Pulver.  If you follow the Spike TV series “The Ultimate Fighter”, where fighters compete to win a multi-fight contract with the UFC, the world’s largest mixed martial arts competition.  BJ and Jens are coaches this season, coaching opposite teams, which also gives the series a good twist because BJ and Jens both hate each other.

I think this is BJ’s time to shine.  Yes, after his long awaited comeback to the UFC, he lost both times, to Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes.  Both somewhat controversial, in which many thought BJ won the fight against Pierre, and his loss to Hughes was only because he separated a rib in the second round but thoroughly beat Hughes the first round.  With these two losses, BJ is looking to take it out on the person who beat him 5 years ago.

Personally, I can’t see how BJ will lose.  He has great standup and matchless ground work.  He hits harder than most people in his weight class, and is able to take a punch without getting knocked out or even hurt.  Jens is a great great stand up fighter, and there is hardly anyone out there who has the technique that he posseses when he stands up.  He has decent take down defense, but doesn’t have much on the ground especially offensively.  Does Jens have a chance to beat BJ?  Sure, especially since there has been a string of upsets (let’s talk Chuck Liddell, Cro Cop, Georges St. Pierre, Rich Franklin, and Tim Sylvia).  But realistically speaking, BJ just has too much technique to lose.

So go and support him and watch the live FREE telecast of Ultimate Fight Night on Spike TV this Saturday.  I think BJ will have his hand raised in victory.
