If you drove by the Keeaumoku Wal-Mart yesterday and was wondering why there was a really long line, it was because L&L Drive Inn was selling 76 cent plate lunches in appreciation of loyal customers. The 76 cent plate lunch was only offered from 11am to 1pm, put people were lining up early in the morning as early as 6:30am.
So how many lunches did L&L sell during this 2 hour period? A total of over 1200 plate lunches, which amounted to about $1000. Of course you couldn’t order anything you wanted, but they did offer a nice variety of plates. In fact, the choices were chicken katsu, kalua pork with cabbage, and hamburger steak. These plate lunches usually cost about $8. And to limit the amount of plates sold so that everyone could get a plate, each person was only able to purchase one plate. Drinks were also offered at 10 cents during this 2 hour period.
And it got even better. The proceeds from the 2 hours sale were given to the Goodwill Industries of Hawaii. And for those of you who were extra loyal and waited since 6:30am in the morning, the first 100 customers received a free L&L t-shirt.
So why 76 cents? Because the president and chief executive of L&L, Eddie Flores, purchased L&L in 1976, so it was celebrate the day he bought the establishment. And if you can imagine, plate lunches sold for around 76 cents back then. How times have changed…

I heard about this through the grape vine. DIdn’t feel like going because I’d think Wal-Mart would be packed. Apparently, my assumptions were true.
