Ono Hawaiian Foods, located on Kapahulu serves probably the best Hawaiian food I have ever eaten, even better than Yama’s Fish Market. We went there one evening because everytime we drive by Kapahulu, we always notice a long line for such a small shop. And small shop it is indeed. The restaurant probably has about 10 tables total, with the walls littered with Hollywood stars who have stopped by and eaten their wonderful Hawaiian food.
First of all, parking is usually a drag. In fact, they even have a sign outside the restaurant that tells you where NOT to park so that your car won’t get towed away. Yes, apparently this place is THAT good that you will find parking anywhere. Luckily, we were able to park about a block down next to a moped store at a meter parking space. All I can say is try to find parking around residential area or along the sides of the road if you want to eat at this place. Normally, the 3 parking spaces located in front of the restaurant is always taken.
So what did we eat there? I ordered the Combination Plate which included kalua pig and laulau, pipikaula, lomi salmon, haupia, and rice (or poi, depending on which on you like). This plate cost $14.75. My girlfriend ordered the Laulau Plate, which included all the above without the kalua pig and cost $11.25. Now I understand why the laulau was voted the best in Hawaii. They give you HUGE amounts of pork inside the laulau, and as you can see in the picture, the laulau is fairly large. Also included with the dish was onions and chili sauce. That was also very good as well, but if you don’t like raw onions, I wouldn’t suggest eating it.

We got the take-out, but you definitely could dine in. So the next time you are in Kapahulu, make sure you drop by Ono Hawaiian Foods. It definitely is worth it!

Yeah, I know that place and I agree with you. I go there every time I am in town. The restaurant is a gem. “Ono” is really “delicious”. Unfortunately they don`t accept reservations. They are very helpful to put a meal together. I in particular love their laulau. It is so huge you can`t eat it.

Yeah, this place is definitely a gem. It’s such a small restaurant, it is easily missed while driving down Kapahulu. And it’s definitely worth the price and even the difficult parking. The laulau takes a while to eat, but oh, it is so worth it.

The restaurant is small, but the food is great. There is usually a line-up out front, but the wait is worth it.
It is a nice walk from Waikiki. You’ll need to walk it off on your return to your hotel after your meal, especially after eating the laulau.
