Almighty John A. Burns School of Medicine…

The 4th of July fireworks off the Magic Island were pretty spectacular indeed.  I have wathced it ever since I moved to Hawaii, and it has always been impressive.   Every year, I watch the show from the same spot, the grassy area next to the John A. Burns Medical School in Kakaako.  There are always bunch of families sitting around and watching the fireworks in the evening.

Yesterday, I took my family and we sat down on  a bench on the sidewalk right next the medical school building.  When we were about to have our tea, a security guard came out and asked us to leave the bench.  I asked her why, and she said we were in th medical school property.  We reluctantly left our bench and sat down on the grass and watched the fireworks.  As we were leaving the area, I heard the same security guard yelling out, “stay off the grass!”  She didn’t even want us to step on the grass right next to the building.  I said, “what is wrong with you guys?”  Her response was that she was only doing her job.

I do sort of understand why the security guard did not want people in the medical school property.  They probably didn’t want people to set off fireworks near the property for obvious fire hazard reasons.  However, my family did not have any fireworks, and we were just sitting down on a bench.  More importantly, the University of Hawaii is not a private school but rather a state school as far as I understand.  A portion of our taxes supports the day-to-day UH operations and constructions.  So basically we were not even allowed to sit on a bench that we paid for partially or to walk on the grass that we paid for them to maintain.  I previously posted an article about the misusage of water by the medical school.  Does the UH medical school think they are above everybody, so they can do whatever they want to?  Are they simply saying, “thanks for the money that you paid to us, but we want you off our property?”  What a great neighbor, huh?  The 4th of July is when the families share a great time, but the UH medical shcool obviously doesn’t want anybody to have fun on their property…

Can I please have my state taxes back that you used for the bench, sidewalk, and grass?  Since I can’t use them, I just want my refund; shouldn’t be too much to ask, right?
