Today was the grand opening of Hank’s Haute Dogs on Coral street, so we decided to make a little trip there, since it is literally across the street of where we work. And on top of that, KHON morning news did a special on them, which made us want to go even more.
Hank’s Haute Dogs is located where the old Rainbow Drive Inn was (not the one in Kapahulu), and across of Volvo. We were greeted by a long line, which was probably due to two reasons: 1. people saw a new restaurant and 2. KHON’s morning news.
Apparently these hot dogs are so good, the lady in front of us drove all the way from Ewa Beach just to get these Chicago hot dogs. Hank, who is actually from Hawaii, but was raised in Chicago, decided to bring his hot dogs back to the islands. And wow, what a great thing he did.
I ended up getting the Chicago hot dog, which is their most famous dog there. The hot dog is actually a genuine Chicago Vienna all-beef hot dog, with a crispy skin that snaps when you bite into it. It was garnished with everything (yellow mustard, very green relish, raw onions, tomato, dill pickle, celery salt, and sport hot peppers). Of course you can choose what you want on it, but I prefer everything. My girlfriend got the No Dog, which was actually really really good and refreshing. Instead of the hot dog, they use a local avocado slice, tomato, onion, cucumber, Chinese parsley, pineapple relish, spicy chipolte mayo, and cheddar. We also ordered a bag of their Awesome French Fries which are cooked twice, and a large soda. So what did this cost us? My Chicago dog cost me $4.50, the No Dog was $3.50, the fries $2.50 and the large drink $1.50.
OK, almost $5 for a hot dog does sound ridiculous, but I have to say it was pretty worth it. Sure, you can get a hot dog at Costco for $1.50 with a drink, and the Costco dog is about 1.5 times the size. But you can’t get the toppings, the variety of dogs, and the fries (or onion rings for that matter).
So here’s a breakdown of other dogs they have: Portuguese, chili dog, italian, brat, chorizo, andouille, chicken, no dog, Chicago, Polish, and duck & foie gras. Sides include the Awesome French Fries (really, that’s what they’re called) and Maui onion rings. Their dipping sauces include wasabi tobiko creme, garlic aioli, and curry ketchup. They even have tropical cocktails, such as the hibiscuc lemonade, the pineapple ice, and the kool ginger soda.
Go ahead and check them out! You might want to go early because they ran out of the polish and chicken dogs by the time we got there (around 11:45am). Their address is 324 Coral St. Bon appetit!
