After much hype from people and newspaper, I finally decided to try out Sogongdong, a Korean restaurant located on the second floor of the McCully Shopping Center.
First off, this restaurant is fairly large. Surrounding the walls of the restaurant are booths with yakiniku accessible tables. If you want to cook your own meats, then these are tables you want to sit at. The middle section of the restaurant are booths that do not have the yakiniku port.
We ended up ordering their original Soondubu, which is their famous tofu soup with beef and pork. We asked for the spicy, but it wasn’t too spicy. The soup didn’t have too much taste, but the pork and beef added some flavor to it. I actually really enjoyed this soup, but I still think the butterfish Soondubu at Sorabol was better. Still, this was not bad at all.
Next, we ordered the seafood pancake with green onion. Now, THIS WAS A GOOD DISH. I really enjoyed the one at Sorabol, but this was just extraordinary. The outside was fried and was really really crispy, and the inside soft and chewy. I can’t emphasize how great this dish was. I would go to Sogongdong just to order this if nothing else. Make sure you purchase this delightful item.
Next, we ordered the spicy barbecue chicken with Kal-bi (or shortribs) combo. This dish was so-so. The flavors were both good, but the chicken was slightly dry and the kal-bi was more chewy than tender. I would advise to have the yakiniku kal-bi instead, because they usually have more tender meats and you can cook it to your liking.
All dishes come with an assortment of vegetables as most Korean restaurants do. The assortment was actually really refreshing and the spicy items not too spicy…it was just right. The only complaint I have was the water. The water had this funny taste…if you ever had grass jelly drinks (found at asian stores), it kind of has a subtle taste of that. It doesn’t really taste like tap water or anything else either. If they had said it was iced tea or something, I would have been OK with it. But when the waiter comes and asks if you want more water, it kind of gets iffy, cause it sure doesn’t taste like water.
All in all, I really enjoyed this place. I think I will go back, and make sure I try other dishes. But I’m SURE I’ll be eating the seafood pancake each time I go. Enjoy!
