For those of you who watch the VS channel (channel 47 on basic cable), they have a show called TapOut. TapOut is a clothing brand that is virtually on every fighter’s fight shorts and shirts. They sponsor all the great fighters, and on the show, look for fighters to sponsor. Some are up and comers, but others are well known.
This past week, I was fortunate to catch an episode that had the TapOut crew visit Hawaii. They went to the Big Island to visit BJ Penn’s MMA facility. There, they decided to sponsor Renato “Charuto” Verissimo, known as BJ’s jiu-jitsu mentor. Charuto has decided to quit his day job and focus 100% on fighting.
The show displayed some of the Big Island as well as Honolulu where Charuto’s fight took place. I was fortunate enough to watch this fight at the Blaisdell Arena to see Charuto’s comeback and win. This is good exposure for Hawaii and puts Hawaii on the map in the mixed martial art world. Not only is this show nationally broadcasted, but hardcore MMA fans will be able to see the good fighters coming out of Hawaii.
I’m glad they took the time to visit Hawaii and film around. Especially with a hot commodity name like BJ Penn, it was a no brainer for TapOut to sponsor someone that BJ trains.
Check out the show. Repeats usually show on Sundays.
