Fire Closes Three Stores in Kaimuki

If you frequent the Kaimuki area, you may have noticed that this weekend, a certain block of stores on Waialae Ave were closed.  This past Saturday morning, Kaimuki Chop Suey had a fire which began in the kitchen of the Chinese restaurant.  Although the fire was contained, smoke damaged six businesses adjacent to the restaurant, closing three of them momentarily.

Azteca Mexican Restaurant (which is actually a good Mexican place to eat at) had to close their restaurant because of soot and the smoke smell.  Jewel and Juice closed for the same reasons.  Both stores have been cleaning up and are expected to open real soon (if not already open today).

The scariest of all was probably Gecko Books, a well known book and comic store that hold many rare and collectible comics, cards, and collectibles.  With the inventory worth between $100,000 to $1 million, it was lucky the fire did not reach the store.

Sadly, these things happen, but I’m glad nothing really burned down.  And thanks to the Honolulu Fire Department, their prompt response and efficient work helped put out the blaze before it really got out of hand.  Props to them and thank goodness no one got injured.
