Picture this. A large teppan grill surrounded by numerous seats. A chef walks in and greets you. He then proceeds to bang and throw his knives around in a fantastic and tricky fashion. He builds a volcano out of onions and sets it on fire, which is then followed by smoke. He also cuts off shrimp tails and throws them into his hat and pocket. This is only a few of the wonderful tricks that the chef performs at any of the three Tanaka of Tokyo locations in Waikiki.
I’ve had the luxury to eat at Tanaka of Tokyo numerous times at the Ilikai location. This is great place, since it’s very large and can accommodate many people. Plus, it was the first Tanaka of Tokyo built here. My brother told me the restaurant at Waikiki Shopping Plaza was nicer, so I decided to try it out.
Boy, it was quite a difference. First off, I noticed that it was smaller, but still decent sized. Next, I noticed that the interior was more upscale and looked more contemporary. With the dining room able to seat 160 people, this place was no slouch. We were greeted by very nice people and seated quite promptly. I would recommend reservations, because on a Tuesday night, the place was completely sold out…and I mean no seats left by the time it was 6:30pm.
So on to the menu. If you order an entree, they all include pickled vegetables, tossed green salad with house dressing, grilled shrimp appetizer, teppanyaki vegetables, steamed rice, miso soup, Japanese green tea, and dessert. We also decided to put in a few orders of fried rice, and at $3.50 an order, it was splendid. The fried rice was made of egg, grilled rice, onions, carrots, and special seasoning. It was pretty much the best fried rice I’ve ever eaten. The fried rice is only one order, and if you want more, you have to pay for it. But the white rice still comes with your meal, and is refillable for free.
Since I love steak, I ordered their Ribeye steak, but the large order which was 9oz of 250g of steak. Ohhh yeah. It was delicious! It was nice and tender, and the meat was nicely marbled for a very flavorful and juicy steak. My girlfriend got the salmon…all I can say was WOW. They grill the salmon with butter, and the outside was so crispy with very tender and flaky meat on the inside. It was sooooooo good. My coworker got the Seafood Combination which included lobster tail, calamari, and scallops. All of which looked very delicious. He gave us a piece of calamari to try, and it was probably the softest calamari I’ve ever had in my life. His wife got the same entree as me and thoroughly enjoyed the dish.
Lastly, all entrees comes with dessert. You have a choice between green tea ice cream, Kona coffee ice cream, vanilla ice cream, and pineapple sorbet. I love green tea ice cream, but I had some for lunch, so I got the Kona coffee. It was spectacular with a strong coffee taste.
We also ordered two bottles of Sapporo, one Mai Tai, and a bottle of cold sake. In total, our bill was $175 for 4 adults and one child. Not bad for food and entertainment. Dishes usually run from $20-30, with seafood dishes going between $30-50.
Check out their website at http://www.tanakaoftokyohawaii.com/english/. They have their full line of menus and locations on the website. I highly recommend this place for those who want entertainment along with great food! Happy eating!
