Iris (the pug) with Halloween witch
The day before: Pricebusters and Savers were absolute madhouses with lines almost all the way to the back of the store, as people frantically made last-minute decoration and costume purchases. Procrastination reigns supreme all over the island on Halloween.
The day of: I decorated and then witnessed the scariest haunted house, complete with (fake) decapitated body parts, hanging dummies, Jason with his chainsaw, and people popping out of a bloody bed, truck, and coffin. The only comic relief from kids dropping their candy and crying/screaming from fright was Iris-the-pug, in her stabbed-with-a-knife costume (see photo).
The night of: Strange and spooky sights along the whole stretch of Kapahulu: grown adults in the strangest costumes ever imagined. Plenty of half-naked/topless women and kissing booths, groups of Santas, Indians, and Blue Men.
The day after: As I am giving my dog a bath to wash off the crust of fake blood on her chest, I consider the eery reality of Halloween and how, on this one night, our inner selves can come out to play.
The conclusion: I am glad Halloween comes just once a year, but sometimes wonder how much this one night brings out the best and worst in all of us.
