The Masquerade Ball

My suspicions that Halloween was not quite over were correct when I donned my gold sequin tank top and black pants last night only to discover I was tragically under- and out-dressed by several dancers at the Hawaii Ballroom Dance Association’s Fall Masquerade. I arrived at Palladium (near Waikiki off of Kapahulu), where most of the Association functions are held, late and tired, but the lively music and energetic dancers immediately rejuvenated my spirits. Patrick, my dance partner, greeted me dressed in a hiker costume—and he wasn’t the only one in costume. A majority of the attendees were dressed in extravagant masquerade attire or in a scary or kooky Halloween costume.

I’ve attended a handful of the dances at the Ala Wai Palladium, but this one certainly pulled out all the stops. A dance competition between several different chapters on the island was held soon after my arrival, and immediately following that were costume contests for the scariest, funniest, and most extra-ordinarily dressed. At half-time, we all ushered out to the lobby for hotdogs, drinks, and snacks, and then returned to the dance floor for extremely complicated line dances.

The Hawaii Ballroom Dance Association holds classes around the island. Even if you don’t have time for classes, you can come to their socials (usually for free). Check their calendar for upcoming events.
