You may have seen her. She’s not hard to miss. 2 pm and I’m at Ala Moana Bowls. Small surf, strong winds, and a bleached blonde whale of a girl is yelling at any non-dark local boy. I paddle out and the bitchy-ass tita wants to fight for ankle slappers. What’s up with that? Come on, localism doesn’t have to happen when the waves are small.
And when the waves are big it’s even worse. More than 20 people are competing for one break, oo-ing and ah-ing at every little bump, ganging up on solo surfers so their buddies can catch a ride. What happened to enjoying nature with peace and quiet or at least with friendliness and comraderie?
It’s not right that surfers–or anyone for that matter–get bullied around. We shouldn’t be afraid of paddling out where and when we want to. But be warned: Bowls, notorious for yelling local surfers, just gets meaner and meaner.
