There will be an important hearing tomorrow regarding the possibility of making the parking lot near Bowls (In-Betweens, Rockpiles, and Kaiser’s) a paid parking lot. This will severely limit parking for surfers, so if you want access to this important south shore surf spot, consider attending the hearing!
Below is a more detailed message from the Oahu Surfrider Foundation:
If you can make time, we really need people to testify against DOBOR’s parking rule changes tomorrow evening!
Dept. of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) is planning a public meeting on December 19 from 6pm - 8pm at Jefferson School (324 Kapahulu Ave.) in the cafeteria for input on their proposal to change harbor rules for the entire state, that will allow them to use private contractors to increase parking rates and add gated parking. At Kaisers-Bowls, this will mean less free spots, and make it harder to get to the ocean. Please attend this important meeting and wear a red shirt!
If you’ve ever parked in the Ala Wai harbor area behind the Ilikai, and surfed Kaisers, In-betweens, Rockpiles, Bowls, Threes, or Fours, you know how important this parking area is. We need to let the state know important it is to keep free parking to access the beach in this area.
Some points:
- Duke’s Lagoon will open next month and they expect it to be a focal point of Waikiki. Visitors to the lagoon will most likely park in the free harbor parking area, making parking scarce.
- State should add MORE parking in light of the new attraction.
- State says they will keep 130 free parking spots, but: For how long? How can this be guaranteed?
- State says they are keeping 130 free spots, but: Right now there are more than 150 free parking spots, if you count those spots along the curved road towards the hotels, and probably more than 180 spots if you include the free spots we often use in the harbor area.
- Ocean recreationists should not have to pay parking in order to pay for harbor maintenance.
- Workers for Hilton and other Waikiki hotels currently use the free parking area.
With a private contractor, how can we be sure there will always be an affordable parking rate?
Please testify!
