Road Rage at the Mall During the Holidays

As I was watching KHON news last night, I was nodding my head in agreement when they were airing a segment on holiday road rage.  Some of the people who were being interviewed voiced how they were being cussed at or blocked in because people were angry since they all want to go shopping but couldn’t get a parking.

All I can say is, CHILL OUT.  Seriously.  Who’s fault is it if you are last minute shopping?  I know, I know, you were too busy with work and family.  How about weeks ago?  Why do you have time now as opposed to before when you were just sitting at home watching TV or out playing golf?  How about shopping earlier whether it’s at the mall or even ordering online?  Many places give free shipping even to Hawaii these days, so don’t make that an excuse.

I was at Ala Moana last night, and yes it was crowded, but I kept my cool.  Parking spaces aren’t worth fighting for, especially since you don’t know what they’ll do to you if you steal their parking.  Karma might come clawing after you.  Just take it easy and life will be much easier.  Is it that much more satisfactory if you cuss at someone for taking a long time?  Would it make the world a better place if you honk relentlessly even though it means you wait another 30 seconds or so?  Does that 30 second actually matter?  Please people, put things into perspective.

Let’s be safe out there, and courteous as possible.  It’s Christmas.  We don’t want any grouches please…

Christmas morning the girlfriend and I woke up to go to 7:00 AM at St. John Vianney in Kailua. We more or less had the the H-3 to ourselves (we live in Aiea), except for a pickup truck and a rental van.

The rental van was riding the trucks bumper for about 2 miles in the rain. Finaly the truck swerves to the right lane, and slows down to be paralell with the van. He popped the van driver the bird and they had words all the way till we popped off at the Kailua exit.

I guess neither the guys in the van or the truck could come up with even a pinch of Christmas Spirit much less Aloha, on Christmas morning.

This prob lies in the fact that people forgot the true meaning of Christmas. As time goes by people become more absorbed into the the material side of Christmas and are letting the true meaning dissolve away. Im all for mixing cultures and getting along but we got a younger generation and people of different backgrounds that know of and like the fun parts of Christmas, they know the charectors, stories and customs yet don’t know the true reason for the season. I recently had some financial setback in my home and as unamerican as I may risk sounding to others, I will say this, after a while I saw the good side to being economicly challenged this holiday season. I actualy had to do the homemade thing and avoided the mall madness I faced all these years when I was financialy better. I prayed that my friends and family apreciate my little tokens of love and appreciation straight out of my kitchen and remembered the true meaning of Christmas giving. Fortunately enough they did. In fact, they were more impressed by my gifts this yr then they were w/ my mall selections. Why is this? This is because the simple truffles and cookies I took hours to make and package with care said I love you and am thinking of you more then the 15 minute purchase of a passing fad or breackable gift I just popped in n out of a store to get sumone.
Sometimes getting back to basics can be beautiful.

I agree in this article about the buying online thought. I too saw the traffic and thought about that too. I thought after all these years of internet shopping being at our finger tips, why are we still in this same holiday traffic rut? Well,I guess deep down Honolulu is still an old fashioned touchy feely, warm feeling inside kinda town. When it comes to shopping. There is also the fact that most online stores are still over charging us to ship online to Hawaii and the fact that we would have to shop before we even get to have our Thanksgiving turkey to get the gifts to this rock on time could be another factor.

As for traffic around here. Our intelligence quotients are getting lower and lower everytime we set our wheels onto the roads here. I just saw an Allstate insurance commercial that just hit the common courtesy mark. I wish it came out sooner and was played more often. Its message was that we need to start treating eachother like good neighbors on the road. I liked the visuals. One was of two men standing eachside of a white picket fence looking like neighbors engaging in a pleasant conversation in they’re yards while this setting was set in the middle of a freeway like H1’s. This is how it should be during the holiday seasons and all the times on the road. That shouldn’t had been just an Allstate commercial, but a state of Hawaii Commercial for our drivers.
