Last night, my girlfriend and I went over to Hawaii Kai where my parents live to celebrate the 4th of July and eat some BBQ in the meantime. Driving on Kalanianaole Hwy, I noticed a ton of tents and police cars with LOTS of people at Maunalua Bay (across Roy’s Restaurant). I wondered what was going on there, so I looked it up on the internet, and lo and behold, Hawaii Kai was having their OWN Fourth of July celebration! This rocks! We were planning on driving back to where we work, where we could have a good view of the fireworks that were going to go off at Ala Moana. Now, we didn’t have to drive back, and we could have a great view of the festivities only 3 minutes away.
Well, the fireworks started at 8pm, but since the place was PACKED, my dad gave us a drive and dropped us off right in front of Roy’s. The fireworks show was magnificent, and it was the closest view I’ve ever had in seeing fireworks. They basically took out a boat with all the fireworks, drove it out a little bit, and started the show. For a good 15 minutes, we were mesmerized by the different types of fireworks with the array of colors and patterns. Of course, they had to throw in the infamous smiley face fireworks. Overall, it was a great time. The only two drawbacks were parking, since it seemed like everyone who lived in Hawaii Kai came out, and how loud the fireworks were since we sat so close to the action.
But I’m really glad they are doing this for the Hawaii Kai residents. They just recently opened the dog park for residents here (with resident money), and now they even brought over a fireworks display. I’m beginning to see why my parents lived here for so long. Hopefully I can move here someday and enjoy everything that is Hawaii Kai.
