The Hawaiian Humane Society’s annual Petwalk this year is Sunday, October 4th, 2009 at 8 am. This unique fundraising event happens once a year where thousands of Hawaiian Humane Society supporters and their pets walk around Magic Island to raise money for this special non-profit organization. For this one day only the city will permit dogs into Ala Moana Beach Park. Supporters can organize walking groups and collect donations prior to the day of the walk.
On October 4th, registration opens up at 7 am and the walk begins at 8 am. On the walking courses there will be a long and short course and water for pets will be provided. No farm animals will be allowed. After the walk, supporters can bring their donations to the main gathering area. At this area there will be refreshments for people and pets, games, entertainment, and even a pet costume contest.
I have participated in the Petwalk for the past few years and I feel this is a fun event to help support my favorite charity. The Hawaiian Humane Society is the second oldest charity in Hawaii and does not receive any funds from mainland organizations like the ASPCA. The Hawaiian Humane Society is a private organization that depends on local donations and fundraisers like this event to support them. Over the years I have been able to take advantage of many of the free and lost cost services that the Humane Society has to offer such as their “Neuter Now” program that offers a low cost option to spay or neuter your pets. Any amount of money donated can make a huge difference.
$50 will help us nurture a puppy or kitten that needs foster care.
$75 Will shelter and care for a cat prior to adoption.
$150 Will help us teach school children to be kind to animals.
$200 Will help offset the costs of rescuing pets from cruelty or neglect.
$250 Will shelter and care for a dog prior to adoption.
