In an ongoing joint promotion with ClearChannel Entertainment’s local radio stations, Mayor Mufi Hannemann and Myron Thomson, CEO of 21st Century Technologies, hit the airways to promote energy conservation and a new monthly electricity-saving initiative called “Honolulu City Lights Out.”
Hannemann is asking everyone in the City and County of Honolulu to turn off non-essential lights and appliances on the third Saturday of every month for one hour between 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
The Mayor hopes this will serve as a reminder for people to conserve electricity and to place importance on saving valuable energy. “It’s a way of keeping this issue one everyone’s mind so they will ask themselves whether they really need lights and appliances turned on all the time,” he said.
Originally inspired by Earth Hour, an annual global lights out project that occurred earlier this year on March 28 and was endorsed by the U.N., Honolulu City Lights Out was the answer to local residents who asked why we should only conserve energy for one hour a year. This monthly program will hope to inspire Honolulu residents to conserve electricity not only once a month, but all the time.
The monthly event bolsters the City’s nationally recognized and award-winning 21st Century Ahupua’a sustainability plan and other public outreach efforts that encourage energy conservation and sustainable practices.
Today is the third Saturday of the month, so you know what that means! Turn off your lights and unplug your appliances this evening between 8-9 p.m. Even if you’re not in Hawaii, you can save some electricity and have peace of mind you’re saving the world one hour at a time.
